The inexperienced captain tried to prepare his taste buds for what he was about to eat, but his brain couldn’t process the flavors of the exotic foods. He had never seen such a divine spectacle on a plate. While Tim was deciding what to eat first, Peter chimed in. “May I suggest you alternate bites between the sea urchin and the tuna? The urchin is salty, and the tuna is like sweet butter,” Peter said while lifting a small, iridescent spoon carved from the shell of an abalone and gingerly scooping out a bit of urchin meat from the belly of the spiny delicacy. Tim followed suit and was amazed at the flavors and how harmoniously they blended in his mouth. A couple of bites into the meal, Captain Peter broke the silence by complimenting Jacques on the appetizer: “Bravo, Jacques. You’ve outdone yourself again. Outstanding!” Jacques peered around the corner from the galley where he was preparing the main course. Nodding and smiling, he said, “Why, thank you, Captain. The next course will be served in eight minutes, sir.” Jacques’ attention to detail hadn’t gone unnoticed by Tim; from his exact timing to the precision with which he prepared the first course, Jacques was a perfectionist. Captain Peter also appreciated the ease with which Jacques carried out a skill that the captain hadn’t mastered himself.
As they savored the appetizer, Peter looked at the “believe to achieve stone” that Tim had placed between the two of them on the table, and returned to teaching mode.
“So let’s recap before Jacques interrupts us with another distracting creation,” Peter said with a wink, just loud enough for Jacques to hear.
“I’ll do my best, Cap’n,” the chef said. “Seven minutes and counting, sir.”
Peter smiled at Tim. “I call Action #4 ‘Recognize Your Reason to Believe.’ Remember this stone; remember the power of a river and how it succeeds. It doesn’t do it all at once; this stone was carved by the never-ending flow, the relentless action of the river. To achieve, you must believe, and believing comes from succeeding, and succeeding starts with small successes. Small successes grow to become bigger successes. The more you succeed, the more you will believe in yourself, and the more you believe, the more you’ll be unstoppable Peter’s voice sank an octave as he said the word “unstoppable,” as if it were rising from his soul. It startled Tim.
“And when you’re unstoppable, nothing can prevent you from following your course, from achieving your dreams,” Peter said. “You’ll never give up. When you learn how to maintain your course and speed no matter what comes your way, you will be your own master and commander.”
Tim dropped his tuna spoon into the belly of the urchin he had just devoured and began furiously scribbling on his notepad. “I’m reading you loud and clear,” he said. “I get Action #4! Believing leads to achieving because it keeps you going when others give up. It’s like confidence fuel to power you through rough waters when the course gets tough.
